Online Safety

Online Safety

At Glenfrome Primary school we use the Internet on a regular basis as part of our learning. To be able to deal with the rewards and risks associated with this, we teach Online Safety as part of our Computing and PSHE curriculum.

At Glenfrome Primary school we use the Internet on a regular basis as part of our learning. To be able to deal with the rewards and risks associated with this, we teach Online Safety as part of our Computing and PSHE curriculum.

We have regular activities based around online safety and posters around the school, reminding us how we are responsible to keep ourselves safe. We use a range of sources to teach Online Safety but primary Project Evolve for KS1 & KS2. This has been designed by the South West Grid For Learning and allows us to develop a bespoke curriculum to suit our children's needs. Project Evolve helps to provide the right opportunity for discussion, prompted by appropriate questions accompanied by honest and useful information to shape thinking and challenge misconceptions.

Staying safe at home

The links below can help you to stay safe at home whilst using the Internet or any other technologies that you may have available.

  • Think U Know - containing internet safety advice for those aged from 5 to 16, along with parents and teachers.
GetSmart - An award-winning internet safety program for children.
  • Childline - Childline is the free helpline for children and young people in the UK.
  • We no longer use Google's Be Internet Legends in school but their game, Interland, is a fantastic resource that you might like to look at with your children aged 7-12.
  • Jessie and Friends is a great resource to use with children aged 4-7.

Search Engines

There are obvious traps with search engines like Google and Bing. Unless you have a third party filter, images and text that are not appropriate to you child may well appear. There are a couple of solutions to this problem. The children can use a child safe search engine called www.swiggle.org.uk. Or you could use google-kids.com.

To keep using Google, but have some control, watch this video link. This will show you how you can adjust your safety search settings.

But most importantly, remind children to talk to you if they are unsure or don't like something they find online.
