Young Carers

At Glenfrome we ensure we meet the needs of all our children, and strive to let them know they have a voice. We have a growing group of identified Young Carers, and have been recognized for this work with the help of the Carers Support Centre.

Do you think you or your child could be a Young Carer? See below for the support available to you and your family.

You’re a young carer if you’re under 18 and help to look after a relative with a disability, illness, mental health condition, or drug or alcohol problem. If you’re a young carer, you probably look after one of your parents or care for a brother or sister’ (NHS,2021)

  • Practical tasks (cooking, housework and shopping)
  • Physical care (lifting or helping someone use the stairs)
  • Personal care (dressing, washing, helping with toilet needs)
  • Managing the family budget (collecting benefits and prescriptions)
  • Managing medication
  • Looking after younger siblings
  • Helping someone communicate
  • Giving emotional support
  • Keeping an eye on things generally

We offer regular check-ins to ensure our Young Carers feel supported and listened to We are considerate and flexible in our approach if caring duties impact learning We have a weekly lunchtime drop-in session for Young Carers where they can meet other young Carers and enjoy some down time. We meet up every term for a fun activity

Mrs. O’Callaghan is the Young Carers Senior Leadership Team Champion and Mrs. Hinchey is the Young Carers Champion at Glenfrome. If you feel your child may be a Young Carer and could benefit from support in school then please do not hesitate to contact them via the school office.
