English

Our core aim is for children to write with enjoyment and confidence knowing that they have the skills to have a go, and know what to do if they get stuck!

At Glenfrome Primary School the study of English develops children’s ability to listen, speak and write for a wide range of purposes with consideration for the audience, including the communication of their ideas, views and feelings by writing to discuss, entertain, inform and persuade. Children are enabled to express themselves creatively and imaginatively as they become enthusiastic and critical readers and authors. Children gain understanding of how language works by looking at its patterns, structures and origins. Children use their knowledge, skills and understanding in speaking, reading and writing for a range of different purposes and audiences.

Foundation Stage

In the Foundation Stage communication and language development are incorporated in all areas of learning. Opportunities are provided for children to communicate thoughts, ideas and feelings. Purposeful role-play is used to develop language and imagination. Children are given opportunities to share and enjoy a wide range of rhymes, songs, poetry and books. An environment is provided which reflects the importance of language through signs, notices and books. As soon as children start school we encourage them to write – this may be mark making initially but we value and celebrate all forms of writing. Children are provided with opportunities to see adults writing and they complete weekly writing tasks themselves, which supports them to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children receive daily phonic sessions to further support the development.

KS1 and KS2

All teachers plan units of work with a clear audience and purpose for writing. Key stimuli (a book, art work, etc.) are used to either inspire or lead the unit of work. Each unit is based upon three phases. The first phase enables children to become immersed in the stimulus, whilst learning key grammatical skills and exploring and comparing text features. The second phase provides an opportunity for children to have a go at writing in a given style for a specific audience and purpose. The final stage provides opportunities for children to apply their knowledge for a different audience and purpose; and to revisit previously taught genres/features as part of our mastery approach to learning.

Writing at Glenfrome

At Glenfrome Primary School, we believe that all pupils should be taught to speak, read and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others effectively. We believe that by immersing our children in high quality literature, which reflects the cultural, social, and linguistic diversity of our children, they will be empowered to become confident, enthusiastic writers. We choose our texts carefully and ensure pupils are exposed to a rich vocabulary and range of genres including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. By writing for a range of purpose and audiences, pupils understand the different levels of formality needed in writing and why writers write. Children learn that writing is a transferable skill, through the identification of writing opportunities across the curriculum.

The Writing Process

There are 5 stages of writing:

  1. Planning stage- pupils use planning to generate ideas and collect vocabulary. This can be done independently or collaboratively. Modelled texts are used and children are taught to ‘magpie’ ideas which can then be adapted in their independent writing.
  2. Drafting stage- Pupils are shown how to structure their writing to reflect the genre or text type. They use this structure in their own writing. They begin to write down the key ideas, orally rehearse sentences and structure their writing effectively for the audience and purpose. At this point, the teacher may provide verbal or written feedback to support the pupil with their next step.
  3. Revising stage- At this stage, pupils are given time to read their work aloud to a partner or have their work read to them. This enables them to evaluate the effectiveness of their writing and hear where there may be any grammatical errors. Pupils ask themselves whether their writing makes sense (grammatically and structurally) and then they will be given the opportunity to re-draft their writing.
  4. Editing stage- Pupils are given the time to edit and make changes identified at the revising stage. They use a purple pen to edit grammar, punctuation and spellings. At the beginning of the school year they work with an ‘editing partner’ and then build up to editing independently.
  5. Sharing stage- Once children have revised and edited their writing, they are given time to share it. This may be through the publication of their writing- which also gives them the opportunity to practise their handwriting skills- or through reading aloud to the intended audience (assemblies or to the class).

The writing process is the same for pupils of all ages. In EYFS and KS1, more time will be spent on the oral rehearsal of sentences and transcription at the planning stage. The above process will begin to be used at a sentence level in Year 2 and by KS2, pupils will be composing whole texts. Each stage of the writing process can be returned to throughout composition as children make their own decisions about how they improve their writing.
